for any questions regarding the AC IMPROV 101 class

Curious about improv comedy? Experienced, but want to learn a new style? Need inspiration? Already an expert but want to practice? Just looking for something fun to do on a weeknight and make new friends? "Improv 101" at the Star Theatre is for you.

In this six-week course applying the Upright Citizens’ Brigade (“UCB”) Method invented by improv luminaries like Amy Poehler, you’ll learn:

  • How long form improv works

  • How to initiate scenes

  • How to invent compelling characters with a backstory in an instant

  • How to build a new reality for those characters to inhabit - in 30 seconds or less

  • What “The Game” is, and why it’s the key to a good scene

Week 1
We’ll work on the fundamentals: Establishing a base reality with the “Yes And” principle and active listening.

Week 2
You’ll develop believable, grounded characters the audience feels invested in.

Weeks 3 and 4
Will teach you to identify, heighten, and play The Game of a scene. It’s not only the key to improv scenes, but to comedy as a whole.

Week 5
You’ll learn to “edit” scenes in service of a show.

Week 6

Your improv show will be ready for filming!

Each class will also incorporate lessons from previous classes. In each class, you and your classmates will act out exercises and scenes. You’ll discuss scenes with the instructor.

On the final day of the workshop, each participant may have
their IMPROV show filmed to add to their Actor Reel!
Daniel Watts studied UCB-style long form improv at Finest City in San Diego. An actor, playwright, and lawyer, his scripted comedy has been covered in the New York Times, New York Post, and regional media.
